WHERE TO NEXT | Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Community Futures - Training & Money to start your own businessI recently met with Kai Turcotte from Basic Elements Fabrication and he shared a little about what it has been like getting laid off and starting a business from scratch. He was fortunate enough to go through the Community Futures BC Development program and he shares a little on how the program helped his business get off its feet. He also shares what it is like to have a business that he is passionate about and as you can see it is not your normal suit and tie business. I have seen the work that comes out of his shop and it would be the equivalent to the Food coming out of the kitchen at Waterfront Wines. Limited work space does not limit Kai and his Basic Elements team.
If you are looking to start your own business or have recently been laid off check out the options available to you. Coming very shortly I will have a video on the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). This is the next level of funding for existing and start up businesses. Watch for that coming very soon.
Take care

Monday, June 28, 2010 No Life Insurance = No OptionsMost of you who have been following me for a while now know I am not much of an advocate of glossy marketing materials or premeditated sales presentations. I am also not much of a supporter of hard "fear of loss" stories but I recently attended the MDRT meeting for financial advisors in Vancouver British Columbia, and was blessed to listen to a speaker by the name of Phil Richards - Scott's Perfect 2020 Vision. He spoke of the story of his own son (Scott). Capitan of the football team, good student, successful career in the financial advising business – Then, all of a sudden he was diagnosed with a serious terminal disease. He had a large mortgage on a new house; he had a wife and 2 small children. At age 30 he passed away and fortunately, he had made the” Special Choice” to obtain a decent size life insurance policy, which took care of the debt and also provided his family with the needed income to maintain their lifestyle - not to mention fund his children's education. Please absolutely re-check your “to-do” list. Dustin T Serviss - Kelowna Financial Advisor Tuesday, June 22, 2010 MDRT Million Meal Challenge Vancouver 2010WOW!
If you would have said we could have packaged 1 million vitamin/rice, soy and veggie packages in two days I would have said... impossible. Once again with the power of numbers and some team work it was achieved just last week.
I recently attended a conference for elite financial advisors around the world and they set a goal to package 1 million meal packages in 2-3 days to help feed hungry families around the world.
The Peacock Sheridan team jumped in and joined forces to help make this goal a reality. It was an action packed session with old rock music playing and the sounds of people yelling for supplies as they were about to run out on the assembly line.
I encourage you to try helping with an activity in your community, you may be surprised at the feeling it instils in you. The MDRT conference is an association that wraps around the globe which made the volunteer effort that much more fun, accents from all over the world to the non english speaking gentleman from India to my left. What a great afternoon it was! Long story short after 48 hours and thousands of volunteer shifts we accomplished the goal of 1 million meals packaged and sent.
Take care

Dustin T Serviss - Entrepreneurs helping Entrepreneurs
Monday, May 17, 2010 What is an OUTLIER and how do they CRUSH IT?I have been spending a little less time reading lately as I am currently preparing another financial designation exam in June 2010... Almost all extra time has been spent with my nose in a text book. I did share a week or so ago the recent book completion - Four Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris, just outstanding and written with so much personality. I have managed to squeeze in a couple in the last few weeks though:
1) Crush It - Gary Vaynerchuk - A good book for people who are interested in growing their business online or capturing some of the momentum a lot of entrepreneurs are creating on the internet. I found the book to have a good over view of general concepts but no real detail into - "actual HOW TO". I understand there are endless platforms of social media and an author could not explain each one but it would have been nice to see one comprehensively broken down in the book (further than Twitter). I am a details person which probably explains my slight disconnect. Overall I found the book inspirational I did extract a number of good nuggets.
Inspired by this "NO HOW TO" issue and my continued passion to helping entrepreneurs build their business on/offline I am going to break down the specifics of FACEBOOK and LINKED - June 24th 2010. It is going to be a live workshop style presentation in Kelowna BC. Seating is limited to 15 people and more details can be viewed at: Online Training to Grow Your Business
2) Outliers - Malcolm Gladwell - I found this book brought a lot of clarity in a sense that Malcom breaks down how people actually became successful... Why Bill Gates is as smart as he his today... Why an extremely large percentage of NHL hockey players are born Jan , Feb and Mar... He explains successful Jewish lawyers in NY and what makes them such solid Grocers. I enjoyed in more than his book Tipping Point as the stories are more relevant and seem to be laid out better... Laid out in a easy to follow sequence. Below is a link to the book...
Also if you are in the Okanagan area there is a great used book store called Pandosy Books. It is at the end of Spall Rd across from Trinity Baptist Church... Check it out, the owner's name is Frank and his prices are more than fair!
